Technical Skills and Camera Angles

Technical Skills-Technical skills are the knowledge and capabilities to perform specialized tasks.

Teamwork-- Team work is an important factor in any project, whether it is between two actors or a whole recording team. This can be executed by listening to each others ideas, working together with no hassle and agreeing on an idea. This skill makes it much easier to commit and complete a project for the deadline needed.

Decision Making-- Decision making is the ability to see multiple viewpoints and accurately decide the choice to be made. Whether this goes against one person's opinion in the team, it has to be more acceptable for most of the group.

Communication-- The ability to understand other people's opinions and ideas or to talk to the group is an important skill as it allows the group to connect with each other and understand each others ideas, coming out with the best result.

Planning, Prioritizing and Time Management-- Planning, prioritizing and time management is an important factor to completing a project as it allows the team to understand what they are doing and what needs to be done first by prioritizing it. Planning can be done by creating a script or a storyboard so the team knows what has to be done or a time table for when you are recording and what you are recording on that day. This allows the team to be organised, knowing their time and what they are doing.

Research-- The ability to be able to compare your idea to professional ideas or to find information. Whether this being in the form of primary or secondary research, it is very important as it allows you to see what audience your product, in this case an advert, would fit best with and what that kind of audience enjoys.

Development-- Being able to develop to an idea or the technology around you allows you to be more effective in the project, allowing you to understand more and how to use it. Technology is not slowing down so being able to develop to it or the environment around us is an important skill.

Technology Use-- Some other kinds of technical skills needed is being able to use the cameras and editing software and understanding how it works. Being able to understand the editing software and knowing how the camera works allows you to get the best results. This makes it much easier to complete the project on time and to get the best quality in this time. Knowledge on camera angles can also help with getting the best results, along with knowledge on how to use a green screen and put a picture behind in editing. Lighting also can be a technical skill as understanding how lighting can make the shot look better makes the overall outcome much better.

Camera Angles and Techniques--

Neutral Angle/ Eye Level- This angle makes you feel comfortable and on the same level as the character on screen, setting a feeling that you should focus on this person and that you will understand them well.

Low Angle-- A low angle makes the audience look up to a character or object, making it more superior and powerful to the other characters. This angle is normally used in super hero movies to make one character weaker than the other.

ECU-Extreme Close Up-- Extreme close ups focus on one part of the body or an object, such as an eye, to show emotion, detail and a level of importance. This is classically used in western films.

Birds Eye View-- Birds eye view is commonly used to establish the setting to get the audience to understand where the film or show is set. This sets the scene to the audience. Most commonly used in Action Movies.

High Angle-- This angle is aimed to make the audience higher than the character, making the character look vulnerable and weak in comparison. This angle is normally used in super hero movies to make one character weaker than the other.

ELS- Extreme Long Shot-- ELS is used to set the scene or to show a group of characters in a situation. This is normally used in a battle sequence to show the setting and what all characters are doing, allowing the audience to understand what is happening in the scene.

LS-Long Shot-- Long shots are normally used to show the whole body of a character as well as the surroundings of that character. This can be used to show the isolation of the character and give the character space to move in the shot.

MS-Medium Shot-- Medium shots show a character from the waist up. This is used to make the audience more emotionally involved in an interaction between two characters or the situation happening around them.

Close up-- This shot only shows a small part of the character to the audience, such as the hands or their head. This engages the audience emotionally and is used to give emphasis on the character.

Pull Focus-- Pull Focus is used to make the audience to focus on one subject to another. It can be used to prioritises importance to two characters, blurring out the background.

OVS-Over The Shoulder-- Over the shoulder is used to show a conversation between two characters to the audience. It is used to make the character feel involved in the conversation and to pay attention to the conversation.

Dolly-- Dolly Shot is used to follow a character or the action happening in the scene. This keeps the character involved in the scene. This is also known as a tracking shot.
